The Gift of Life: Supporting a legacy of hope for patients and families of Grey Bruce

Each April, Be a Donor Month is recognized across Ontario, reminding us that the impact of the Gift of Life extends far beyond a single moment on the calendar. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, while a single tissue donor can enhance the lives of as many as 75 people.
During the 2025–2026 year, Brightshores Health System supported 27 organ and tissue donors and their families, each a reflection of generosity at a profoundly difficult time.
“Our team is deeply honoured to be trusted by families during such emotional times,” said Dr. Kseniya Troyan, Brightshores Hospital Donation Physician. “Supporting people through the gift of life is a privilege, something that we approach with great care. By choosing to register as a donor, individuals can bring hope to other families and create a lasting impact well beyond their own journey.”
Brightshores is also being recognized for its commitment to organ and tissue donation. Ontario Health’s Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN), the provincial organization responsible for coordinating organ and tissue donation and transplantation services across Ontario, has presented Brightshores with a Provincial Conversion Rate Award.
The conversion rate measures how often potential donors become actual donors – how many families, when approached with care and sensitivity, choose to give the gift of life. Hospitals that meet or exceed TGLN’s 63% conversion rate target are recognized for helping more lives through donation. Anyone 16 years of age or older with a valid Ontario health card can register their consent at beadonor.ca or in person at any ServiceOntario location.
