The winter disconnect ban is now in effect and runs until April 30th, 2024.
Electricity and gas distributors are prohibited from disconnecting residential customers for non-payment from November 15th to April 30th. They are also required to reconnect residential customers who were disconnected for non-payment before November 15th, by December 1st.
Electricity distributors also may not install load control devices (devices that limit how much electricity is supplied to a home) on homes from November 15th to April 30th.
Electricity and gas distributors can however, continue to charge late payment fees on past due amounts during the winter disconnection ban period.
According to United Way Bruce Grey, LEAP (low-income energy assistance program) has been out of natural gas funds since September, 2023 but will refresh in January, 2024 and Westario also ran out of funds in the summer.
