Young students learn about nature and release their raised fry into the Saugeen River

Each winter, elementary school students have the opportunity to raise salmon as part of the Lake Huron Fishing Club’s (LHFC) school outreach program sponsored by Bruce Power.

LHFC volunteers maintain aquariums in each school where students can watch ‘their’ fish grow until the Spring release.

The program helps young students become involved in the environment and learn about Nature’s food chain of life.

Grades 1&2 students of Port Elgin Saugeen Central School recently released their salmon fry, that they raised from eggs in their classroom hatchery, into the Saugeen River.

The students take the release very seriously and some can be seen pointing out the direction of the lake so that their fish know which way to go.

Volunteers Gretchen Ball and Jane Ann Smith helped the students prepare to release their “School Hatchery” salmon.
