There are few people in Saugeen Shores who do not recognize Jerry Woods, a greeter at WalMart in Port Elgin.
On Sunday, November 10th however, it was unusual to see Woods wearing a hat while working, but it was one he wore with pride.
It was designed by his son Christopher, a veteran of Canada’s Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) (LdSH[RC]), Canada’s only regular armoured regiment of the Canadian Army and Canada’s only tank regiment, currently based at CFB Griesbach in Edmonton, Alberta.
Christopher Woods is a veteran of the Afghanistan war and did two tours of duty, the second as a personnel in Canada’s Leopard Tank division, so that the hat he designed bears an image of a Leopard tank and the regiment’s LdSH[RC].
“My son came home, where others didn’t,” says Jerry. “He designed the hat and had approximately 100 of them made that he gave to the men he served with, so I wear it with great pride this Remembrance Day weekend.”
No longer in Canada’s Armed Forces, today Christoper Woods lives in British Columbia with his wife.
