A rootin’ tootin’ FUNdraiser for local health care

The Gran Fondo Casino rolled into town for a rootin’ tootin’ wild west night when cowboy hats and boots were everywhere.

The ‘Sheriff’ of the event, Martha Bennet, Chair of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation and her team of volunteers, made sure that everything was happening as it should.

“We are so proud of our volunteers and what has been accomplished this weekend,” said the ‘Sheriff’, “our hospital is so important in keeping health care close to home.  Whether it’s for our residents or our visitors, the hospital plays a key role in our local health care.”

With bull riding and axe throwing, along with line dancing and betting, there was something for everyone.

More than 800 cyclists were in town to participate in the Gran Fondo FUNdraiser for the local hospital and the weekend proved to be a hit with most residents and visitors alike.

Held in Southampton at the Coliseum, there were some 15 tables from blackjack to poker where betters could play the odds while raising funds for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The Casino night might have been the end of the Gran Fondo weekend but, because it was a family event, it continued to Sunday when the Gran Fondo Kids’ races took place on High Street.

Earlier in the day, the Gran Fondo cyclists raised more than $400,000 for the local hospital but a total raised, including the Casino and Kids’ races, have yet to come in.
