One of the most popular Fall events in Bruce County is the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest and, this year, was the 39th annual celebration where thousands of people come from far and wide to attend the event.
Unfortunately however, there are also those who have no scruples, no morals and little intelligence … why else would someone attack a service group such as the Lions’ Club? This is a group that gives back to the community, that helps with the Service Dogs for the Blind, that is out at Pumpkinfest every year with a food tent to raise funds to help with their projects.
On Friday, October 4th, in the middle of the night, someone or several people, took it upon themselves to rob the Lions of a major amount of food that would have served the public the following morning at Pumpkinfest.
“On Friday night, they took all our peameal bacon that was to be part of our fundraising breakfast on Saturday morning,” said Lions President, Ed Buckle. “Then, on Saturday night, whoever took a lot of the remainder of our food were not satisfied and set our tent on fire!”
According to Buckle, several residents stepped in during the fire to remove the propane tanks used for cooking along with the vats of oil used for french fries … “or the situation would have been much worse!”
“As it is,” said Buckle, “we have lost thousands of dollars just in supplies and equipment, not taking into account the money that we would have raised for our community projects!”
The incident is under investigation by Saugeen Shores Police.
