An auspicious beginning to Marine Heritage Festival

The Marine Heritage Festival weekend began Friday night, July 16th, when some 500 visitors took in the activities at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre.

The evening began with the Jazz Summer Music Gala.  The Bruce Power theatre was filled to capacity with an over-flow accommodated in the Museum foyer to watch the performance electronically.

The Gala, under the direction of Mike Grace, presented seasoned musicians alongside students who had attended the annual Summer Music camp held in Port Elgin during the past week.  For two hours, the band played jazz classics and favourites as vocalists Laurie McKinnon, Brad Nichols and Karen Young demonstrated through song what they had learned during the week about performance and working with a band.

At the conclusion of the performance, some visitors toured the Museum while others headed outside for the BBQ and cornroast prepared and hosted by the Rotary Club of Saugeen Shores.  With perfect weather, people didn’t mind the line-up outside and the meal at the end, that included fresh corn on the cob donated by Hi-berry farm, was “well worth the wait” said one visitor.

Long line-up didn’t appear to phase anyone

While John Stewart provided the music throughout the dinner, everyone enjoyed their meal on the patio overlooking Fairy Lake.

It was an auspicious start to what is one of the major events of the summer in Southampton, the Annual Marine Heritage Festival, with a full schedule of activities planned for the following day, July 27th.
