Bruce Power and its partners in labour and safety honoured workers who have been killed, injured or become ill on the job during the annual Day of Mourning ceremony on the Bruce site.
Alicia Spitzig, winner of the Grey Bruce Labour Council’s Day of Mourning speech contest, spoke and laid a wreath at the Day of Mourning ceremony at Bruce Power on April 29th. Bruce Power welcomed family members of those who lost their lives in the building of the Bruce site, as well as members of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, the Power Workers’ Union, The Society of United Professionals, the Grey Bruce Labour Council, the building trades, and Ontario Power Generation.
Bruce Power was joined by representatives of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, the Power Workers’ Union, The Society of United Professionals, the Grey Bruce Labour Council, the building trades and Ontario Power Generation along with employees, as well as the families of those who died during construction of the Bruce nuclear site, to the ceremony of remembrance.
A cairn outside Bruce Power’s Corporate Services Building memorializes these 11 fallen workers, 10 of whom were part of the construction trades.
“At Bruce Power, safety is always our Number 1 priority,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s President and CEO. “It’s important to reflect upon those who lost their lives while building the Bruce Power site. Every day we honour their memory by working as safely as possible, with the ultimate goal of never having to tell another family their loved one is not coming home at the end of the day.”
