The Regional Food Distribution Association, which supports First Nations and other communities in Northern Ontario, will be receiving some assistance from Bruce Power to fight COVID-19.

Bruce Power announced that it will be sending 5,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and making a donation of $45,000 to the Thunder Bay-based organization for distribution to 45 First Nations communities. The bottles of sanitizer are included in the supply of 50,000 bottles that the company has purchased from Junction 56 Distillery in Stratford and with distribution support from Three Sheets Brewing in Port Elgin.

“This was a very easy decision to reach out and give a hand to the Regional Food Distribution Association with this donation,” said David Abbott, Director of Community and Indigenous Affairs. “While our efforts around the COVID-19 pandemic have been focused on helping people in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, we didn’t hesitate to help the Association address the increased need for support from the First Nations communities in northern Ontario.”

The Regional Food Distribution Association typically provides assistance to 30 First Nations communities, but the impact of COVID-19 has seen the number of communities needing help increase to 45.

“We truly appreciate this much-needed support from Bruce Power to help out during these uncertain and difficult times,” said Volker Kromm, Executive Director of the Regional Food Distribution Association. “We have seen many organizations come forward with extraordinary acts of kindness, compassion and generosity that will help us get through the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Greg Rickford, the Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Minister of Indigenous Affairs, expressed his gratitude to Bruce Power for the assistance.

“Bruce Power continues to demonstrate the Ontario Spirit as they support communities across our province,” said Rickford. “We are all in this together and during these uncertain times it is critical that we support communities in the far-reaching corners of our province.

“Thank you Bruce Power for this generous donation to support northern Indigenous communities.”
