As the company continues to build a dynamic workforce now and for future generations, Bruce Power is honoured to be recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2024, for the fourth consecutive year.
The company continues its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) journey by continuing to build its programs to sustain an accessible and positive environment by providing opportunities for everyone.
“We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far to make Bruce Power a diverse and inclusive environment for everyone,” said Karen Smith, Vice-President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “We’re continually learning from our people about their needs and this helps to inform our programs. We’re already starting to see progress from many of our employee resource groups and training initiatives that will help us move forward on this journey.”
Bruce Power’s diversity initiatives focus on attracting, developing, and retaining diverse talent. We educate our Talent Acquisition team about Employment Equity and use data to determine where we may be able to challenge ourselves to broaden our talent pools. From there, we work with our managers to integrate the foundations of diversity, equity and inclusion in our business to ensure all employees understand and feel the company’s commitment. In 2023, the company trained over 900 leaders in steps to ensuring a Psychologically Safe and Inclusive workplace.
A key piece is building for the future, which includes partnering with schools and organizations, such as Ontario Tech University, Skills Ontario and Build a Dream, to build awareness of STEM opportunities with a focus on increasing diversity within engineering and trades. Steps like guaranteeing co-op opportunities for women in nuclear engineering are making an impact.
Bruce Power also has several groups that are passionate about creating a more inclusive workplace and improving awareness and education around the importance of diversity, including its Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Women’s Forum, Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Indigenous Network, North American Young Generation Nuclear (NAYGN) and Women in Nuclear.
Based in part on feedback from its Women’s Forum, which identified a challenge in finding child care as a potential barrier for women to enter the workforce or take on more challenging or senior roles, Bruce Power has began funding a scholarship program for people seeking careers in early childhood education in the area to close the gap in qualified child care providers.
Bruce Power’s DE&I programming is driving business results by measuring its performance in several ways, including benchmarking external best practices, partnership with a data and analytics company supporting organizations to become more inclusive, and tracking and improving diversity initiatives and our other environment and sustainability goals through a formal Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) balanced scorecard.
