Community shows strong support for local hospital during annual RADIOTHON fundraiser

Once again, the community came through in strong support of the local Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation through the annual RADIOTHON.

The RADIOTHON held on Thursday, December 12th began at 6:00 a.m. and ran all day until 6:00 p.m. at 97.9theBruce radio station and is a fundraiser for needed equipment at the Saugeen Memorial Hospital.

In spite of severe blizzard conditions, some donors found their way into the station while others donated over the phone and on-line.

Volunteers took care of the phone-in donations and, thanks to local businesses, no-one in the station went hungry.  Tim Horton’s owner Dave Falconer delivered hot coffee, muffins and Tim-bits first thing in the morning … with a surprise donation of $6,139 from the Tim Hortons’ Smile Cookie event.

Without the volunteers, the day could not go on

At lunch everyone also enjoyed pizza from the newest Southampton’s Convenience store pizzeria, along with sub sandwiches.

As the day wore on, everyone began to become more excited as the donations continued to come in at a rapid pace as the end of the day drew near.

James Scongack, Executive Vice President Bruce Power, came into the station once again this year to take his turn on air for the last two hours of the fundraiser and to receive calls for donations and lend a new energy as the day began to wind down.

Several Bruce Power suppliers and colleagues who donate each year again called in their donations in support … E.S. Fox $10,000; NPX $5,000 in memory of a colleague Greg Stewart; Kinectrics $5,000; Carpenters Union Local 2222 $1,000 … and more.

While these donations came in, there were also many individual business owners who contributed: Andy Kupurus donated while in Florida – $10,000 on behalf of Lakeridge Estates in addition to a personal family donation of $5,000; Mike Mowbray and family of Mowbray’s Canadian Tire $5,000; Gord and Ann McKay $500 each; Steve Dennison of Dennison Homes $3,000 … in addition to the many individuals who donated on a personal level.

“Every donation, no matter how large or small is so appreciated,” said Graham Martin, Executive Director of Saugeen Memorial Hospital foundation. “Whether corporate, business or individual, it’s an indication of how people in the community appreciate their hospital and having quality health care close to home.”

Regardless of how the donations came in, more than $185,000 was raised, although the final total has not yet been determined as donations were still coming in on-line at the end of the day.
