On December 9th (2024), Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce held a “Welcome Home” celebration for Shaelyne and her son Abel who received the keys to their new home in Neyaashiinigmiing (Cape Croker) built by Habitat Grey Bruce.
Shaelyne, a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, expressed her gratitude to everyone present and to Chief and Council:
“This has allowed me to give my son housing security and allows me to continue to raise him in this loving community. This gift has changed our lives in so many ways. Thank you.”

In a statement on behalf of the Nawash Council, Chief Greg Nadjiwon added, “The construction of affordable quality homes is empowering families and generations to come to achieve their dreams. Our relationship with Habitat for Humanity is a critical part of our efforts to tackle the housing crisis faced by many of our members. We look forward to building on this success to realize our goal of safe, affordable homes for all members of the Chippewas of Nawash. Thank you.”
The home is the 20th house built by Habitat in the First Nation’s territory since 2018. The Build engaged 200 volunteers who contributed nearly 2,000 hours building Shaelyne’s home guided by Habitat’s construction team.
Habitat Executive Director Greg Fryer said that, “The opportunity to build affordable homes in Neyaashiinigmiing, providing skills training and employment opportunities for members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation is truly meaningful for all of us at Habitat. We are honoured to have this growing partnership with Chief and Council.”
To date, Habitat’s Model of Hope partnership with Saugeen Ojibway Nation has created 36 new homes and the completion of more than 160 critical home repairs for member families.
