When it comes to fighting childhood cancer, Brian Whitworth, a resident of Port Elgin, is planning to ride 500 kilometres and raise $2,500 during the month of August for The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in support of its 9th annual Great Cycle Challenge Canada.

“I am in my fifth year of fundraising totalling over $22,000. You may have seen me around town and surrounding areas dressed as various superheroes,” says Whitworth. “Every year SickKids chooses a hero to best represent them, so I dress as that hero to help bring awareness. This year I will be out and about on my bicycle and trailer, dressed as Thor. Watch for me! Donations can be made online at thtps://greatcyclechallenge.ca/riders/brianjoseph“
“I am also continuing with my ‘can/bottle drive‘ at 479 Mill St, (Port Elgin) which has already seen a large quantity of cans dropped off,” adds Whitworth.

Founded in 2016, Great Cycle Challenge Canada has grown to become one of the biggest cycling events in the country. In just eight years, over 130,000 riders from all provinces and territories have ridden 24.2 million kilometres, raising more than $47 million for research, care and the development of better treatments and cures for childhood cancer. This year, SickKids Foundation hopes more than 15,000 riders will take part to support of kids’ cancer.
“Cancer is the largest killer of Canadian children from disease and over 1,700 Canadian children are diagnosed with cancer every year,” said Nancy Jordan, Associate Director of Event Marketing at SickKids Foundation. “Thanks to riders like Brian, we’re fuelling groundbreaking research to save lives and give kids the brighter future they deserve.”
“This is the fifth time I have participated in Great Cycle Challenge,” said Brian Whitworth. “During those years, I rode 2,995 kilometres and raised $22,609.13. This year, I am aiming to raise $2,500 and ride 500 kilometres.”
