Major Port Elgin road project about to begin

Port Elgin is about to undergo a major road project on its main Goderich Street vehicle traffic flow and sidewalk restoration.

As part of the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) Connecting Link Program, funding has been allocated for rehabilitation from the South end of Port Elgin (Concession 6) to its north end  (Concession 10).

The project will include asphalt resurfacing of Goderich Street and the restoration of the historic brick intersections in the downtown core. In addition, there will also be underground infrastructure upgrades.

The work will be carried out in the following phases, with a focus on downtown Port Elgin, starting in April to hopefully avoid the busy tourism season:

Phase 1:

  • Underground service replacement and interlocking brick replacement at the intersections of Gustavus Street and Green Street.
  • expected to take approximately 4-5 weeks.
  • Estimated start on March 31st, 2025, with expected completion date of May 16th, 2025.

Phase 2:

  • Underground service replacement and interlocking brick replacement at the intersections of Mill Street and Elgin Street an new asphalt between Market Street and Emma Street.
  • expected to take approximately 4-5 weeks.
  • Estimated start on May 19th, 2025, with expected completion date of June 27th, 2025.

Phase 3:

  • Various underground storm infrastructure replacements along Goderich Street between Ivings Drive and Concession 6.
  • expected to take approximately 3 weeks.

Phase 4:

  • New asphalt on Goderich Street between Emma Street and Concession 6
  • expected to take approximately 2 weeks.

Phase 5:

  • New asphalt on Goderich Street between Market Street and Concession 10
  • expected to take approximately 2 weeks.

Exact dates of Phase 3 to 5 will be confirmed in a future public notice.

Project Details:

  • Work will be completed by E.C. King Contracting and D&I Wattam Construction.
  • Hours will generally be from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, in accordance with Town bylaws.

Traffic and Parking Impacts:

  • Goderich Street will be closed to through traffic in sections as underground services are installed at downtown core intersections.  Detour routes will be in place to redirect traffic around construction zones.
  • Pedestrian access to downtown businesses will remain open throughout the construction period.
  • Alternate parking areas will be provided, where possible, to ensure continued access to downtown businesses. We encourage the public to utilize alternate parking areas and municipal parking lots when visiting the downtown area.
  • Alleyways will remain open for deliveries to businesses located along Goderich Street.
  • Ridge Street (from Bruce Road 25) will be temporarily opened to provide an alternative route to the south end of Port Elgin.

As work continues, there may be brief interruptions to downtown water services while connections are being changed but residents will be notified in advance of any planned interruptions.  In the event of an unplanned interruption, such as a waterline break or other unforeseen circumstances, the Town and its contractors will work quickly to restore service.
