Obituary UPDATE: Carolyn Jean Grady – November 10, 2025 – Age 79

A Celebration of the Life of Carolyn Grady will be held at Bruce County Museum on Saturday, May 30th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

It is with much sadness and love, that we, her family, announce the death of Carolyn on November 10, 2025.

Beloved wife of Art Grady of Southampton, fondly known as CC and Gramma CC to stepsons Matthieu and Thomas (Emily Stiver) and four very “cool” grandchildren: Lucas, Luna, Sebastian and Lila.

Carolyn was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario and is predeceased by parents, Bill and Lucy Binnie and older siblings Bill, Joan and Bruce. She is survived by her brother, Don (Lidia) of Kingston as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

Carolyn’s connection to Bruce County area began as an infant camping at Port Elgin every summer. That much loved experience throughout her childhood became an important touchstone all her life. Later in the 1970s, she worked in Walkerton and later moved to Port Elgin in 1992.

Carolyn graduated from McMaster University in 1967 with a BA and later earned an MSW from University of Toronto. She practised social work in several child welfare agencies, at McMaster Medical Centre, as a clinical therapist at Chedoke Child and Family Centre, and in private practice in Grey Bruce. For many years, concurrently, Carolyn was contracted by the Children’s Lawyer of Ontario to conduct court ordered family assessments.

Carolyn was faced with renal failure at the age of 15, and later, following home dialysis, received a kidney transplant in 1985. This was a defining moment in her life and such a remarkable gift. Carolyn never lost sight of this as a second chance and credited her regular swimming over 40 years as one of the many reasons that her transplant lasted so long. This gifted time gave her a career, and the opportunity always along with her beloved husband Art to travel extensively and enjoy so much of life.

Carolyn wanted to express her profound thanks to the Renal Unit team at St Joseph’s Hospital, (Hamilton) that provided such constant care since 1979. She also wanted to thank all her groups of friends who provided enormous support in Southampton. And to the wonderful Hamilton friends “The Ladies of The Club” and Kristy and Christine. And of course, Gwennie, (Lamont) with whom she spoke on a daily basis and her husband Neil, who was instrumental in helping Carolyn make her way through the medical system, especially in her last year. And, last but not least was her constant, her husband, Art, who never wavered in his devotion, love, support and was so much fun.

Carolyn loved nature and the protection of whatever small parts are left. The Bruce Trail, especially the Peninsula Sections in all its beauty, inspired her and lifted her spirits always.

Donations in memory of Carolyn are welcomed by the Bruce Trail Conservancy, the Saugeen Shores Aquatic and Wellness Centre or any charity of your choice.
