Saugeen Rail Trail depends on volunteer dedication

For more than 30 years, the Saugeen Rail Trail Association (SRA), a charitable, non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers, has been dedicated to the development, enhancement and maintenance of the trail system.

Built on what was the previous rail line, the rail trail encompasses some 25 to 30 kilometres throughout the Saugeen Shores area. From Concession 6 in Port Elgin to Grosvenor and Adelaide Streets in Southampton, the trail is accessible and inviting for walking, jogging, cycling and cross-country-skiing.

Maintenance of the trail is through a number of community partnerships and volunteers who spend thousands of trimming brush, resurfacing pathways, clearing debris and caring for the natural surroundings to ensure the trail is safe, welcoming and beautiful in all seasons.

Over the years, there have been significant improvements that include the Mill Creek Bridge installation, building the Southampton Rotary Rail Head and Memorial Gardens, the addition of the Port Elgin Train Station and washrooms along with a paving project between Concession 10 and Elgin Street in Port Elgin.

The Rail Trail in Saugeen Shores plays a key role in the community’s outdoor culture and connection to nature.

At its Annual General Meeting in November, the Committee accepted nominations for 2026.
