It was a ‘Battle of the Brushes’ as ‘celebrities’ and actual artists faced off in a one-hour long artistic war of paint on Saturday, August 24th (2019) in ‘the Alley’ between the Southampton Art Gallery and Art School.

Emcee Jenn O’Reilly entertained the audience, who had gathered to watch while the ‘artists’ each created a unique piece of work.
The ‘artists’ stopped at nothing to convince the audience to vote for their ‘peoples choice’. Among the uninhibited methods used were the blatant ‘Vote for Debbie’ signs everywhere for artist Debbie James and the ‘Bob and Ross twins’, who captured their idol artist, Bob Rossi, in manner and appearance.

From the Mayor of Saugeen Shores to the Chair of the Art Gallery and other guest artists, they all had one hour to create an original piece of art. Once it was time-up, they had to put down their brushes and then their canvases went to the auction block. There, auctioneer Pat O’Connor, encouraged buyers to bid on the paintings with proceeds going to children’s programming in the visual arts at the Art School.

Overall winner of the peoples’ choice was no surprise when it was accomplished artist Marion Anderson, who won the first ‘Battle of the Brushes’ trophy.
The first FUNdraiser of its kind at the Southampton Art Centre, organized by Emily Laur, is expected to become an annual event. A final amount raised is yet to be determined.
