Students continue to get hands-on experience while helping the community

Under the direction of teacher Bud Halpin, Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) students have continued to build a wide variety of projects to gain hands-on experience. This semester, students from two different classes helped to build sheds for use by community organizations.

The students designed and built a 10 X12 foot equipment shed for the Saugeen Shores United Football Club that will be moved to Helliwell Field in Southampton.  A second 10×24 foot shed was also designed and built by the students that will be used to store Physical Education equipment.  Both sheds were constructed at the Parks and Community Services Yard in Port Elgin.

Teacher Bud Halpin said he is thankful that the Town gives the students the space to work in.  “The Town graciously let us set our tool shed and classroom up on site and provided two porta-potties, so we were all set up.  The Offsite Construction class started the sheds, and then the following grade 11 class continued the work.  Both classes worked very hard on the projects and really enjoyed it.  The students like being out of the classroom and actually working on a real job site.”
Halpin added that it was unfortunate classes were interrupted by school closures during the stay-at-home orders of Public Health during COVID but added that the sheds are substantially finished.  “There are only a few touch-ups left to be completed.”
The students have completed many projects found throughout the community.
