Saugeen Times has been inundated with messages over the past few days about the cutting down of mature, apparently hundreds-of-year-old Maple trees on County Rd. 25 (known locally as CAW Rd.) in Port Elgin.
As one reader pointed out, “We used to be called the ‘Town of Maples’ because it was so beautiful. I guess we’ll lose that to so-called progress too.”
Another reader said that ‘We can put man on the moon, but we can’t save our own trees?”
The road is about to undergo a major transformation to make room for housing and other development and will include widening and a bicycle lane.

At the recent Town Council meeting on March 25th, Mayor Luke Charbonneau explained the town’s position for the removal of the trees.
