Water is a precious commodity any time of year

Dear Editor,

We’re in the second week in April, having just come from the wettest week of the year, so far.  At this time you might ask why we would worry about water. In addition,  we live beside the largest freshwater resource on the planet – the Great Lakes.

It’s hard to imagine right now that in just three months the Town of Saugeen Shores may be pleading with us to preserve water.

So, I will now share our own experience. When our water bill arrived in late November, it was significantly higher than expected.  I assumed the water rates had increased significantly. However, it wasn’t water rates – it was 100% consumption. The staff in the town was excellent. We closed all valves for 24 hours. Apparently over 400gal/day were just flowing through our house unused. It wasn’t the toilets and there was no leak. The culprit was a line that feeds the sump pump. We hired Montgomery Plumbing who fixed the issue in less than an hour.

I believe we saved over $300 in the past four months. So, don’t wait for the town to plead for conservation. Check your water usage now! Consult the very knowledgeable town staff for guidance if necessary.
