Local residents Jennifer Kirby and Erika Werger, former co-presidents of Satellites Gymnastics Club, along with Board Members Stephanie Guran and Jenna Kreller have donated $5,829.84 to the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce on behalf of the Club. The not-for-profit gymnastics club closed its door in June 2018 after over 40 years in service in the community. Upon closing Jennifer and Erika knew they wanted to give back to kids in the community. They wanted to donate to a program where children are engaged in positive physical activity, which is why they decided to donate to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.
The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign supports the Y’s financial assistance program. Currently 1 in 7 children receive financial assistance to access the Y. At the Y, we believe that health should not be a luxury; that the health of local children and families should not be determined by their neighbourhood or bank account. Statistics show that many local people simply do not have the financial means to access health and fitness programs which would greatly benefit their overall well-being. 20% of Owen Sound & Chatsworth residents belong to a low-income household (this is the highest ratio in all of Grey-Bruce*).
YMCA CEO, Gayle Graham says “The YMCA is so grateful for this generous donation. As a charity, it is our goal to ensure that our programs and services are accessible to everyone, no matter what their financial circumstances are. We believe every child should have the opportunity to be active, learn how to swim, build confidence and friendships, and make memories at camp and other youth programs. Donations like these ensure no child is left behind.”
