Gran Fondo Lake Huron 2025 a winner for local health care

The 2025 Gran Fondo Lake Huron has come and gone for another year but the results will stay with Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation long after as $430,600 was raised by  participants that included 900 cyclists, individuals, companies and organizations, with more funds to come in.

“It’s wonderful how supportive everyone is,” said Foundation Chair, Martha Bennett. “We have so many to thank – Bruce Power and their suppliers, our 27 sponsors, the Town of Saugeen Shores and our more than 140 volunteers, who without them this could not happen.

Of course, we have to also thank our more than 900 cyclists who came out to ride and it’s incredible when you realize that 60 – 65 per cent came from outside of Bruce County.”

Following the rides, everyone returned to Southampton Coliseum for a BBQ lunch and recognition of the fundraisers.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau said Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation has raised millions of dollars over the years  “… to ensure we have first rate health care close to home in our community.” He also said that the volunteers are “community champions” and “without folks like them events like this wouldn’t happen.”  He also pointed out that it’s the professionals who work in hospitals, long-term care homes and doctors’ offices who “… make it look easy because of their professionalism, their knowledge, their hard work and who are fantastic folks who make life better for all of us”, with each point drawing rousing applause from one of the largest crowds to attend the event.

The Brady Bunch team had 81 cyclists this year and continues to be the number one fundraiser. For the first time, the Gran Fondo also had Ambassadors and, this year, they were Sue and Jim Caley of the Brady Bunch.

Nathan Faul tried his key but – no luck

Also new this year was the ‘Key to Care’ prize cage challenge.  There were three prizes with a lock to each and only one key to open each.  The keys were $25 for one or five for $100.  If a key opened a lock to one of the prizes, the winner walked away with that amazing prize.

It proved to a fun exciting event as there were only 300 keys sold and people lined up ready to give their keys a try.
