Letter to the Editor: Tribute to a retiring Councillor and volunteer

To the Editor:

Dave Myette is retiring from Saugeen Shores Council.

Dave has made a significant contribution to council, serving three terms as the Saugeen Ward Councillor, and tirelessly advocated for our rural ward. Dave has served on almost all Council committees during his 12 years of service to Saugeen Shores.

He has contributed to our community in many other aspects as well.

Dave worked for Ontario Hydro then Bruce Power for over 30 years. During that time, he was the Power Workers Steward for seven years, and the Chief Steward for four years, following which he was chief Steward with the Society of Energy Professionals for an additional five years.

Dave is an avid outdoorsman and worked to support his passion. For 28 years, he volunteered at the fish hatchery and fishpond with the Lake Huron Fishing Club, several of those years as Chairman.  Dave also bought 100 acres and let it revert to the wild, naming it “the turkey ranch” and reached out to support the Saugeen Shores Butterfly Way Project, offering transplants from his farm.  We went to take a look, and it turns out Dave Myette has the biggest wildflower / butterfly pod in Saugeen Shores!

Dave’s leadership extended into helping the more vulnerable people among us as well.  For over five years, Dave served on the United Way board of directors, including two terms as the Board Chairman.  From back-packs for back to school, to dealing with people displaced, to the Coldest Night of the Year walk, Dave was behind the sense making it work.

At times, Dave can be outspoken, but he has a big heart.  His life’s work demonstrates leadership, service to others, a willingness to lend a hand, respect for the environment, a commitment to conservation, and of course, a commitment to municipal politics.

Lastly, Dave is a committed family man, who will now have more time to spend with his wife Melinda and his two daughters.

Enjoy puttering around your farm, Dave, and spending time at your turkey/deer/butterfly ranch.

Thank you for your service to our community, enjoy your retirement, but I won’t be surprised if you are out there somewhere in the volunteer world!

Your colleague,
Bud.
