Cham-bettes Christmas Home Tour 2024: The Munro-Kershaw Home

The Munro-Kershaw Home
Helen Kershaw & John Munro

After multiple visits to Port Elgin taking in multiple sunsets, we began to explore the idea of leaving our life and home of 16 years in Burlington for something … simpler. Another visit, another sunset, a casual online real estate browse brought up 649 Elgin Street. Within minutes of walking through the front door we were bowled over by light, height and … that staircase! We could see past the intensely deep jewel-coloured painted walls, the awkward ‘loos’, lack of storage and the very-cool-but-not-so-practical second staircase located at the back of the house.

We had found our new home.

The house was built in 1880 for Peter W. Anderson, a merchant, who shared ownership of the Anderson & Gordon Grocery store. The house is an example of Italianate architecture. A style known for symmetry, low-pitched roofs, ornate decorative details, round-arched windows, and classical influences.

Dennison Homes and Bruce County Custom Cabinets worked their magic recreating the upper and lower rooms at the back of the house. The mystery of the unknown, peeling back 144 years could be equated to opening Pandora’s Box. They mastered the reno beautifully!

It’s been a fun ride so far, but it’s not over. The dance-card includes a new window facelift, a kitchen reno, a garage-to-studio conversion and the outdoor space re-imagined.

We are grateful to live in a house that inspires us to be creative. We love quirky, we love fun and – if it’s not obvious when you visit – we really love lighting.

We are excited to welcome you to our home!
