Council resumes meeting after speaker is escorted from Chambers

Once again, at Saugeen Shores Council meeting on Monday (March 11), John Mann almost had his chance to speak.

He was however, ruled out-of-order under the six-month rule.  The rule prohibits anyone from speaking on the same topic within a six-month period.  Two weeks prior, the rule was waived for Mann who did speak to the same topic. This time around however, Council refused to vote for waiving the rule again.

Instead, Mayor Luke Charbonneau repeatedly asked Mann to take his seat and “give up the podium”.  What resulted was a verbal exchange between Mann and the Mayor.  The Mayor then recessed the meeting saying that the police were going to be called and Council and staff left the Chambers.

Approximately, 15 minutes later, a Saugeen Shores police officer arrived and Mann was escorted from the Chambers  and Council returned to carry on with the meeting.

Mann has asserted in the past that the six-month rule is contrary to the Charter of Rights.

According to Mayor Luke Charbonneau, Mann disrupted the meeting and has done so in the past.  “He knows the six-month rule but continues to thwart it causing disruption.”
