Huron-Bruce Federal Liberal candidate, Allan Thompson, has opened his first campaign office in Goderich at 61 Hamilton Street.
Thompson was surrounded by family and many Liberal supporters as he cut the ribbon at the grand opening on Saturday, June 8th.
This is Thompson’s second bid to turn the tide in Huron-Bruce from its current Conservative hold. In the 2015 election, he raised the Liberals by 23 per cent with 23,000 votes coming in a close second to the incumbent.
Thompson was born and raised in Bruce County where his family still resides today and he and his wife Roula, and son Laith, now have a home in Goderich where he has also started a strategic communications company, Market Street Strategies.
A journalist who began his career at the local newspaper in Kincardine, Thompson went on to work for the Toronto Star and is Associate Professor at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communications. A Senior Fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) Thompson recently launched his most recent book, Media and Mass Atrocity: The Rwanda Genocide and Beyond, published by CIGI Press. He also initiated the five-year media development project in Rwanda called “The Rwanda Initiative” that took more than 150 Canadian journalists and journalism students to Rwanda.
As nominated Liberal candidate, Thompson uses social media extensively in his campaign and has been attending as many events as possible throughout Huron-Bruce counties.
