The Port Elgin and District Lions Club is celebrating Canada Day with the first annual ‘Fun In The Sun’ event on Friday, July 1st from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Port Elgin main beach.
The fun at the beach will include a sand sculpting contest and a kids scavenger hunt around the beach front area.
There are three categories for the sand sculpting competition: Advanced- for experienced sculptors; Amateur – for beginners and those with some experience; and 12 & under.
Professional sculptor Tanya Kastl, as seen on CBC’s Race Against the Tide, will be there and will also be offering limited special sand-sculpting lessons to help teams win the big prize!
Local wood carving artist Gerald Guenkel will also be competing in the sand sculpting competition. Guenkel is a local chainsaw carver who has created wildlife sculpted artworks throughout North Shore Park.
Participants can register at thegoodtimegangss@gmail.com, stating your name, category and an e-mail transfer for your category. Registration fees for each category are: Advanced fee: $10, Amateur fee: $5, and for 12 & under: FREE! Lessons from Tanya Kastl are $5 per person, per half hour.
There will be a grand prize of $200 for the Advanced category along with other prizes for each category.
The kid-friendly scavenger hunt from 10am-2pm begins anytime with a check-in at the registration desk. Participation prizes will be awarded upon completion of the scavenger hunt (while quantities last).
