Men’s Shed gearing up for Spring

Every article I write has one common thread: what to write about this time and how can I possibly meet the publishing deadline. Our group continues to look for ways to reach out and find ways to get more men interested in coming out to our gatherings. The focus is to make new friends and keep men socially active.

Each Monday, we get ten to fifteen guys out for coffee and a hike and, on Tuesdays, we get six to eight out for scale model and carving.

We are also busy plotting. Plotting our next project that is. On Friday March 21st, we will get together to make bird feeders to sell this summer. We are also plotting to get more men involved in our activities such as building scale models, learning to carve, plotting Canada Day events, pig roasts, teaching men to make soups and stews. Sinister stuff.

Thanks to the power of the local newspapers such as Bruce Peninsula Press, Wiarton Echo, Owen Sound Sun Times and Saugeen Times, our success story continues to spread. I can tell by the number of phone calls I’ve had from different groups and individuals who have read these articles and felt inclined to call. This really helps fuel our group, thank you to all who reach out!

Orders also continue to come in for the raised planters for the fundraiser for ‘Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home’. If you’re like me you’re sick of shovelling, ice dams, slippery driveways and are thinking about starting herb and vegetable seeds to put in your planters and gardens. I expect that sales will accelerate as soon as we can see our lawns again next month, and we are up to the challenge of building more planters.

Last year we tracked over 1,000 volunteer hours from members, and this year so far over 200 in January/February.

Every Monday morning, we meet for coffee from 9am-11am, and our monthly meetings are the third Saturday morning of the month, same time. You don’t need to be a member to drop in for coffee. Both are held at Canadian Legion Branch 202 on Highway 6 just north of Ferndale. Doors open at 8:45 and all are welcome.
