Obituary: Phyllis Horbatiuk – December 13, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Phyllis Horbatiuk (neé Weiler) peacefully at home on December 13, 2024. Mom was a pillar of strength, faith, wisdom and love to her family and friends.

Phyllis was born in Walkerton, Ontario on July 13, 1925. Loving wife of Eugene who predeceased her on April 11 of this year. Married for over 70 years, Phyllis and Eugene were parents to Paul, David, Stephen (Wendy), Lorie (Patrick), Ken (Kimberly) Lynne (Paul), Catherine (Larry) and James (Kristen). Beloved grandmother of Emily (Benjamin) Wrobel, Jeffrey Horbatiuk, Hunter, Michael, and Chandler Harrison. Predeceased by parents Eugene, Melinda, brother Ken Weiler and granddaughter Allison Horbatiuk. She is survived by brother Ron and nieces and nephews.

Mom grew up in Mildmay, Ontario living through the Depression and World War ll then leaving for the University of Toronto in 1944, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts in Household Sciences. After graduation, she accepted a position as the dietician at Simpson’s and it was there, she met Eugene. Phyllis and Eugene enjoyed many happy summers at their cottage in Port Elgin with family and friends. She was a very active and longtime parishioner at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church. Phyllis was a proud, longtime member of the Canadian Federation of University Women.

Phyllis had a phenomenal memory and was consulted by countless relatives for historical family details. Although her body was failing, her mind was brilliant until the very end. The last few years she accepted her challenging health issues with grace and dignity. Her faith gave Phyllis the strength to continue living as fully as possible.

We thank long-time family doctor Michael Wong, palliative doctors, nurses, and all of the wonderful caregivers who the Good Lord sent to look after Phyllis and Eugene. A heartfelt thank-you to Mahalia Dote who patiently and lovingly cared for our Mother for the last few years.
