The Civic Holiday long weekend kept OPP busy with their weekend traffic campaign.
West Region OPP laid 1,815 charges following 2,107 traffic stops across the region during the campaign that ran from July 31st to August 3rd (2026).
The campaign focused on negative driving behaviours that contribute to traffic collision deaths, injuries and property damage including speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving.
Police also enforced Ontario’s Move Over law, which is designed to give emergency personnel the safe space they need to assist motorists and conduct other work on the roadside.
The West Region campaign results are:
·        856 speeding charges
·        178 seatbelt charges
·        14 distracted driving charges
·        45 impaired driving charges
·        11 Move Over charges
Speeding remains a leading contributor in crashes, fatalities and injuries across Ontario and 14 people have died in speed-related collisions in West Region so far this year.
Essex County appears to be the leader in all aspects of negative driving behaviour.
