It was an entire weekend of activities as Saugeen Shores celebrated the 25th Anniversary of amalgamation of Southampton, Port Elgin and Saugeen Township under the umbrella of Saugeen Shores, and it was also the 150th anniversary of the founding of Port Elgin.
On Sunday, August 11th, the community held the ‘Parade of Champions’, a concept of and organized by former Councillor Neil Menage, and that featured many individuals and several organizations that have made a difference in the community.
From athletes to charitable organizations, a chess champion to the founder of the Southampton Art Gallery, the parade demonstrated the many contributions made to the amalgamated community of Saugeen Shores.
The parade ‘floats’ were drawn by tractors in recognition of the importance that agriculture has played in the history and development of the community. “We were worried about the weather but it cooperated,” said Menage, “and the farm community came in and did their thing and that is not lost on us. They are champions in everything that we need.”

The parade wound its way along Goderich Street and ended at Lakeview Park where there were speeches and a town-hosted BBQ.
“We are so lucky to live in this community,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau, “and one of the best things is the people and the champions that we have.”
