Dear Editor, Wednesday, November 1, 2023
Thanks in part to your recent coverage, the initial response to the planned renewal of the Southampton Cenotaph, by Community Donors, has been heartening. The design evokes the Vimy Memorial with a scale version, pictured here. And incorporates the plaques from the existing Cenotaph that honour local soldiers from the Town, as well as from Saugeen Ojibway Nation.
So far, the reasons given by Community Donors for their financial support have included: “it honours the memory of a member of my family too”; “it incorporates the Canadian flag at the foot of High St. in such a compelling way”; “it enhances the streetscape with a renewed Cenotaph”; “it is a timely project in our troubled world”; and “it is so timely with Remembrance Day just ahead”.
To make a tax receiptable donation, please contact Corporate and Financial Services at the Town of Saugeen Shores: 519-832-2008, x 115.
Among so many local veterans, I think my great-grandfather would be pleased.
Peace,
(Rev.) John Lougheed
