St. Paul’s Anglican Church again hosts appreciation dinner for Hi-berry migrant workers

St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Southampton, in appreciation of the migrant workers from Mexico who work at Hi-berry farm, hosted a BBQ dinner once again for them last night, Thursday, July 18th.

Southampton Rotary Club members flipped burgers and cooked hotdogs that were served alongside salads and decadent cake and ice cream for dessert prepared by St. Paul’s ‘ambassadors’.

This year, there is a full complement of some 30 workers, with several returning for more than 20 years.  While many only work at Hi-berry during their stay, others extend their time and move south to Leamington for the longer growing season.

The workers come north each summer to work the fields that produce fresh vegetables and fruits sold at the farm on Hwy. 21 between Southampton and Port Elgin.  The summer employment helps to support their families back home in Mexico.

“We truly appreciate all that they do,” said Rev. Carrie Irwin, “and when they’re here, they are part of the community.”
