Unit 1 sets post-refurbishment record run of 193 days

Bruce Power’s Unit 1 set a post-refurbishment record run on Feb. 24, generating low-cost, clean electricity for 193 consecutive days.

The unit sets a new record daily through continued reliable operations.

Unit 1’s run of uninterrupted production is the longest since it was returned to service in 2012, proving that extending the life of Bruce Power’s nuclear fleet is sound business, and provides benefits to Ontario’s families and businesses by generating low-cost, reliable electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week, said Len Clewett, Executive Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer.

“Since Unit 1 was returned to service it has been a workhorse for the people of Ontario,” Clewett said. “Its excellent performance, highlighted by this record run, shows the commitment to extending the life of our reactors by the Government of Ontario and our owners makes good business sense, because refurbished units are proven to perform at a high level.

“With strong planning and execution of future maintenance programs, we have no doubt Unit 1 – and our other refurbished units – will continue to be a good investment for Bruce Power while benefitting the families and businesses of Ontario for decades.”

Units 1 and 2 were returned to service in 2012 after the Bruce A station was shut down by the former Ontario Hydro in the 1990s. Units 3 and 4 were restarted in 2003 and ’04 and have performed at the highest levels since. Units 3 and 4 are part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program and will undergo their own Major Component Replacement Projects from 2023-28, adding about 30 years of life to the reactors.
