When it came to having fun in the sun on Saturday, July 2nd, of the long weekend, Port Elgin Beach was the place to be.
The Port Elgin and District Lions Club hosted the first ‘Fun in the Sun’ event and all ages came out to watch the sand sculpting contest and Celtic Dancers, and for the youngsters to take part in a scavenger hunt.

The sand sculpting contest had various categories including amateur and professional with prizes awarded in each.
Sharon Nesbitt, a professional sand sculptor who has sculpted in the CBC’s Race Against the Tide’ in New Brunswick, has also been a past regular at the Sauble Beach Sandfest. On Saturday she created a mermaid amidst sea creatures and won first place which was a prize of $200.
Second place prize went Gerald Geunkel, a master woodcarver who turned his hand to sand sculpting. Geunkel’s woodcarving works are throughout North Shore Park where he turned storm-felled trees into forest animals and they are also around Fairy Lake in Southampton. Moving away from animals, he created Jabba the Hutt and for his effort won the $50 prize.

A family time at the beach

“This was such a fun day,” said Lions Club volunteers and organizers, Dave and Christine Menscher. “We are hoping to make this an annual event for families. It takes a lot of work but Lions are all about giving back to the community.”
