On February 20th , the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Southport members contributed a significant amount of non-perishable and personal items, along with over $400, to the Salvation Army Family & Community Services Food Bank in Port Elgin (Saugeen Shores).
Over the past year, the CFUW has hosted guest speakers who are experts on the topic of food insecurity and members have become aware of the impact it has, particularly, on women, children and seniors in the community. While knowing that food banks are a temporary solution, there is the larger problem that relates to the need for a living wage legislation, inadequate housing supply and struggling funding for social services.
Nikki Thompson, Senior Family Services staff in Port Elgin, said that the number of people regularly using the food bank has jumped dramatically by 46 per cent with approximately 400 now using its services.
