Feast Day of St. Joseph celebrated in Port Elgin

Members of the congregation of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Elgin recognized the Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker as they walked in tribute while carrying a statue of Joseph and singing a litany of hymns.

The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker is celebrated annually on May 1st, honouring St. Joseph as a model for labourers, craftsmen, and all who work. Instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955, the feast day highlights the dignity of work and connects it to the Christian faith.

St. Joseph was a carpenter, a humble profession that provided for Jesus and Mary. He is recognized as a model of diligence, craftsmanship, and humility.  The day is marked by prayers for workers, Masses focusing on the dignity of labor, and reflection on St. Joseph’s role as the foster father of Jesus. When this feast was established, Pope Pius XII wanted to ensure that workers remembered the spiritual dimension of their labor and to emphasize that all honest, manual work holds high dignity.

Following the procession, members attended a reception in the Church’s Jubilee Hall.
