It was somewhat a confusing time following Kincardine Mayor Anne Edie’s sudden resignation on April 9th.
Randy Roppell stepped in, as his position of Deputy Mayor warranted, to take over the helm.
At the Municipality of Kincardine Council meeting of April 19th however, municipal staff presented a report on the options available to fill the vacancy in accordance with the Municipal Act.
It was an expected result following a petition of only 500 signatures that asked that the municipality hold, at least, a by-election to elect a new Mayor.
The options available were to hold a by-election or to use the ‘Appoint a Current Member of Council’ to fill the vacancy. Deciding that the by-election option would be too expensive, Council decided to use the latter of ‘appointment by Council’.
With the latter option, nominations were received from two councillors, Gerry Glover of and Maureen Couture both of Ward I (Kincardine).
In the end, Gerry Glover was appointed to fill the seat of Mayor in a 5-3 vote.
Glover was elected as a Ward I Councillor in 2018 and is the Policy Chair for Arts, Culture and Heritage and has served on various other committees including the Community Environment Committee and Employee Negotiating Committee.
“This is an unexpected turn of events,” said newly-appointed Mayor Gerry Glover. “We need to be strong as a community and as a Council”.
On April 26th, Kincardine Council will declare vacant the seat of the Ward 1 Councillor, previously held by Gerry Glover.
