Two sides to every story

In appreciation for another viewpoint and on the stance of objective journalism, Saugeen Times is pleased to help clarify the situation recently raised and quoted by those impacted by the unhoused situation and the stance of the YMCA.

The YMCA shares the concerns expressed in the recent article for people who are experiencing homelessness and believe it’s important that the community has clear and accurate information about the supports that are available.

In particular, the article quotes “Unfortunately, I also just learned that some in the emergency shelters have been given notice that they have to be out by May 1st in preparation for the Tourist season”. To clarify, the YMCA has not asked anyone to leave emergency shelter by May 1st to accommodate tourist season, nor is emergency shelter being reduced or closed to accommodate tourism.

It is also important to clarify that when individuals exit emergency shelter they are not simply ‘given a tent’ without support. When people transition out of emergency shelter, efforts are made, often in partnership with other agencies, to connect them with appropriate housing options, outreach services, and additional supports based on individual circumstances.

The YMCA works closely with many community partners to provide coordinated, compassionate services, and there are ongoing efforts to respond to growing and complex needs. We are always open to conversations that help clarify how our programs work and how we can continue to work together on meaningful solutions to homelessness.

Given the importance of accurate information on this topic, reflect that individuals have not been asked to leave emergency shelter by May 1st to accommodate the tourist season, and that people exiting shelter are supported through coordinated services rather than being discharged without assistance.

The YMCA always suggests the following avenues for the most up-to-date information regarding support and services available for community members. If community members are in need of support or are concerned about the well-being of a person who is unhoused, they may:

•             Call 2-1-1 or visit 211ontario.ca.
•             Call YMCA Rural Housing and Homelessness Outreach at 519-371-9222.
•             Contact Bruce County Human Services at 1-800-265-3022 or e-mail                                                              HuSinfo@brucecounty.on.ca.
